Most travellers finish on the coast. Stone Town for the history and the food, the north for the beaches, and Pemba if you want somewhere genuinely quiet.
The islands
Three quite different places
They are usually combined, and they are a short flight from Arusha or straight from the Serengeti.
Nungwi and Kendwa
The north coast, where the beaches are widest and the swimming is least affected by the tide. Dhow sunset cruises leave from here.
Pemba Island
Quieter and far less visited than Unguja. Known for its reefs, for Ngezi Forest, and for the ruins at Mkama Ndume.
