Tarangire National Park
Baobab country, and large elephant herds along the Tarangire River.
Tarangire is the closest of the northern parks to Arusha and is often the first stop on a northern circuit. It is defined by baobabs, by rolling country rather than flat plains, and by the river that runs through it.
In the dry season, from around June to October, the river is one of the few reliable water sources in the region, and the elephant concentrations along it are among the best in East Africa.
It is also excellent for birds, with well over 500 recorded species, and quieter than the Serengeti or the crater at almost any time of year.
