Arusha National Park
The Momella lakes and Mount Meru, an easy first day out from Arusha.
Arusha National Park is the closest park to town, and the most overlooked. It has no lion and rarely elephant, which is exactly why it can offer things the bigger parks cannot.
Walking safaris are permitted here with an armed ranger, and canoeing on the Momella lakes is possible. Giraffe, buffalo, colobus monkey and a great deal of birdlife are all common.
Mount Meru, at 4,562 m, sits inside the park. It is a serious trek in its own right and is sometimes used as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro.
