Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, where a designated driver will be waiting for you after you pass through immigration and customs. Look for a sign with “TanAfrica Safaris” and/or your name. The journey to Moshi typically takes a minimum of 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Today, you will have a trek orientation with your Kilimanjaro guide. This will also be an opportunity to acquire any rental items you may need and to prepare and pack for the upcoming trek. You can leave any extra luggage that is not required for the trek at the hotel. If you have the time, we recommend considering an additional rest day before embarking on your trek. Note: Meals are not included on this day.
Following breakfast and a pre-climb briefing, embark on a scenic drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, a journey lasting approximately 45-60 minutes. Upon arrival, complete the necessary registration procedures and commence your exhilarating climb. The initial leg of the journey takes you through the enchanting rainforest to reach the Mandara encampment. As you traverse the rainforest, be on the lookout for majestic Eucalyptus trees, diverse birdlife, and playful Colobus monkeys. Embarking on an ascent, we traverse past the final watering point, advancing onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro nestled between the majestic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The landscape undergoes a transformative shift as vegetation gives way to upper heathland, eventually dissolving into an ethereal "moonscape." Following a nourishing dinner, take ample rest, and make preparations for the impending summit climb. — Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft — Distance: 9km/5.5mi — Hiking Time: 5-6 hours — Habitat: Alpine Desert Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
In the early hours, from midnight to 2 am, embark on the challenging ascent to the summit, navigating steep and rugged scree or snow-covered terrain leading to Gilman’s Point, perched on the crater rim. Continuing with unwavering determination, ascend further to Uhuru Peak, the zenith of Africa. Revel in the breathtaking panoramas unfolding at every turn and capture the moment with a summit photograph to share with friends and family. As we descend, a pause for lunch and repose at Kibo precedes the onward journey to the Horombo encampment. The initial phase of this climb unfolds in darkness, necessitating the use of headlamps or flashlights. Expect frigid temperatures until the descent begins, requiring all layers of warm clothing. This segment constitutes the most demanding part of the trek, marked by numerous switchbacks. Progressing slowly with a "pole pole" (Swahili for "slowly") approach and maintaining an optimistic mindset are crucial for conquering this challenge. — Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft — Down to: 3700m/12,200ft — Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down — Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 15km/9mi down — Habitat: Alpine Desert Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Following breakfast, embark on a gradual descent, navigating through the expansive moorland until reaching Mandara Hut. Continue the downward journey, traversing the verdant forest path leading to the Marangu National Park gate. Lower elevations may present wet and muddy terrain, where gaiters and trekking poles prove valuable. Opt for shorts and t-shirts, although keeping rain gear and warmer attire accessible is advised. At Marangu village, a vehicle awaits to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi, approximately a one-hour drive. Remember to express gratitude to your dedicated guides and porters.
